CELEBRATE THE SEASONS AND HOLIDAYS WITH BOOKS When you follow the natural flow
of the seasons
and the calendar it's amazing how much learning can be effortlessly
added to our childrens' lives. It's easier to do
this
naturally with preschoolers (i.e., science and art in the fall with a
leaf walk and some leaf rubbing fun afterwards) but somehow with the
felt pressure of needing to produce academic results in older children,
we can miss out on some of the ease and joy of this ideal natural
learning with our older children.
My teenager still loves to go on nature walks, to celebrate Advent with daily singing and art projects and to learn history with each of the holidays that occur throughout the year. The possibilities are endless! Year ago when I had just two little preschoolers I can remember going for a walk on Columbus Day and wanting to tell them, as we walked, a summary of why the day was special ... I felt frustrated because I'd grown up in England and didn't know how to simply communicate the story to them. I knew I needed some good picture books on the subject. And so was born our Holiday Library! Here are some calendar favorites to follow: January: New Year's Day; Martin Luther King Day February: Chinese New Year (date changes yearly); Valentine's Day; President's Day, African American History March: Easter, Passover, St. Patrick's Day April: Gardening, Botany and Spring (Easter when appropriate) May: Memorial Day, Military History June: Flag Day, Summer projects and games, Natural History guides, July: Independence Day; Swimming, the Ocean, Beach Wildlife August: General Jewish History and celebrations September: Fall and Nature Activities October: Columbus Day November: Thanksgiving and Colonial History, Elections December: Advent, Christmas, Hanukkah Looking for a new approach to
learning during the season of Advent?
